The Perfect Road Trip: Easy Weekend Getaway From Broward County

One of the absolute best perks of living in Broward County is our geographic jackpot. Within a couple of hours, you can trade the suburban charm of Coral Springs or the bustling streets of Fort Lauderdale for a complete change of pace.

If you are looking to escape the daily grind without dealing with airport security or long-haul flights, the ultimate weekend getaway is waiting just south of the Monroe County line. Pack a light bag, roll down the windows, and let’s take a quick road trip down to the Upper Florida Keys.

Be warned though! The officers here have a zero-tolerance for speeding and driving infractions.

The Destination: Key Largo & Islamorada (The 2-Hour Escape)

While people often think of Key West when they think of the Keys, driving all the way to Mile Marker 0 takes a solid four hours from our area. If you want maximum relaxation with minimum driving, the Upper Keys (Key Largo and Islamorada) offer that distinct "island time" vibe just 90 minutes to two hours away.

Here is how to spend the perfect weekend away:

1. Dive In: John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (Key Largo)

As the very first undersea park established in the United States, John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park has become a must-visit, bucket-list destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and anyone interested in exploring the vibrant marine life just off our shores. Located conveniently close to home, this unique park offers an unparalleled opportunity to experience the beauty and diversity of coral reefs, making it a true gem right in our backyard.

  • What to Do: You can rent a kayak to paddle through the winding mangrove creeks, book a glass-bottom boat tour, or take a snorkeling excursion out to the famous Christ of the Abyss statue.
  • Why it’s a Great Escape: The moment you submerge into the crystal-clear water and see the vibrant coral reefs, the stress of the workweek completely evaporates.

2. The Local Tradition: Feeding the Tarpon at Robbie’s (Islamorada)

Just a bit further down the Overseas Highway at Mile Marker 77.5, you’ll find Robbie’s Marina, a truly iconic and old-school Florida destination that has been a beloved spot for both locals and visitors for many years. Known for its laid-back atmosphere and unique charm, Robbie’s offers a variety of activities that capture the essence of the Florida Keys lifestyle. Whether you’re interested in feeding the giant tarpon, renting a kayak to explore the surrounding waters, or simply enjoying fresh seafood at the marina’s restaurant, Robbie’s Marina provides an unforgettable experience that you simply have to enjoy at least once during your visit to the area.

  • What to Do: Buy a bucket of bait fish, walk out onto the wooden docks, and dangle a fish over the edge. Massive, 100-pound wild tarpon will launch themselves out of the water to grab it right from your hand.
  • The Vibe: It’s surrounded by local open-air artisan markets and great waterfront dining where you can enjoy a cold drink with your toes in the sand.

3. Sunset & Seafood: Bayside Dining

You can’t visit the Keys without experiencing a legendary bayside sunset, where the sky transforms into a breathtaking canvas of vibrant colors, casting a warm glow over the tranquil waters and creating unforgettable memories that will stay with you long after the sun has dipped below the horizon.

  • Where to Go: Head to Sundowners in Key Largo or Lorelei Cabana Bar in Islamorada. Both sit right on the water facing west, offering front-row seats to the best sunset show in Florida, complete with live acoustic music and fresh mahi-mahi tacos.
  • Bonus: For the absolute BEST Key lime pie you can find, you might want to venture a little further down the road to Marathon. There, be sure to stop at the S.S. Wreck & Galley Grill, a charming spot known not only for its inviting atmosphere but also for serving what many consider the best Key lime pie in the entire Florida Keys.
